Jason Garrett not worried about DeMarco Murray's finger injury
In nine games Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray has already posted career highs in carries (225) and (1,133) as well as fumbles (five).
Murray was wearing a splint on his right pinky finger on Tuesday after getting hurt late in last week's 28-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
"I think he'll be OK," coach Jason Garrett said.
But it adds to the ball security questions. Teams have been going after the football as Murray fights for extra yardage, and they've had success. Perhaps the injured finger could lead to Murray being even more conscious of how he carries the ball and help him. He has just three fumbles in his first three seasons.
Murray had at least 20 carries in the first seven games but has had 19 in each of the past two games. The slight decrease has been in part due to circumstance. The Cowboys were trailing by two scores in the fourth quarter against the Cardinals after he had 17 carries in the first three quarters.
The Cowboys have wanted to monitor Murray's snaps if not his carries. He has played 43 snaps in each of the past two games but remains on pace for 400 carries.
"DeMarco's our bell cow, our workhorse," Garrett said. "He's going to get the football. We're going to run the ball and he's going to be the guy who carries it more than anybody else. But we believe in the other guys. We believe in Lance Dunbar and Joe Randle. We want to give them chances as well. Obviously we want to be balanced, we want to run it, throw it. DeMarco's a big piece of this thing. We feel good about him as a runner. We feel good about him as a receiver and he's going to play a lot of snaps for us. But those other guys deserve a chance as well
