LB Keith Smith Signed Off Practice Squad; DE Cut (Hint It's not Michael Sam)

As expected, the Cowboys signed rookie linebacker Keith Smith from the practice squad to the active roster on Friday/Saturday.

With both Rolando McClain and Justin Durant expected to miss Sunday’s game with the Rams, Smith (6-0, 232) will likely be active as a backup and will play on the majority of the special teams units.

To make room for Smith, the Cowboys cut defensive end Lavar Edwards. The team traded for Edwards before the regular season, giving the Titans a conditional seventh-round pick.

Smith, who went undrafted had a rather quiet training camp and preseason with the Cowboys, registering nine tackles, including seven solos with one tackle for loss. He also had two special teams in the four exhibition games.

With Smith active, it should give the Cowboys six linebackers active against the Rams. With Bruce Carter, Anthony Hitchens and Kyle Wilber expected to start in the base defense, Cam Lawrence, Kory Toomer and now Smith should serve as the backups.
