Romo dons Caleb Hanie’s Jersey to Sneak Into Drills

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been limited thus far this off-season as he continues to rehab from his back surgery underwent just a few days before the Week 17 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

On Tuesday, as is typical with Romo’s funny-guy attitude, he swapped jerseys with newcomer and fellow veteran Caleb Hanie. Romo donned Hanie’s #7 jersey, threw a few passes, and was about to line up in 7-on-7 drills when Head Coach Jason Garrett caught Romo in the act and yanked him out.

DallasNews.com has a video with pictures of the failed plan, along with a brief interview with Romo about the ordeal. In the interview, Romo seems quite pleased with himself, cheesing it up for the cameras talking about how he “almost got away with it.”

I have personally been one of Romo’s biggest critics, but I can’t help but laugh at this situation. Beyond any of Romo’s faults, this is a guy who truly loves the game of football.

On a more serious note: With Romo still recovering from injury and backup quarterback Kyle Orton still missing, Brandon Weeden has been given an outstanding opportunity to get all the first team reps in this week’s 3-day mandatory minicamp. This will be valuable experience for Weeden as it looks more and more each day as though he will go into next season as the #2 quarterback.

While Romo is still recovering from back surgery, it is understood that if he had to play today, he could. The Cowboys are simply trying to ease him back into action, being extra-cautious with their $108 million quarterback to hopefully prevent re-injury.
