Stephen Jones expects Kyle Orton to return

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones didn’t sound worried about backup quarterback Kyle Orton's absence from voluntary offseason workouts.

However, Jones did say he expects to see Orton for the mandatory veteran minicamp from June 10-12. The organized team activities, which aren't mandatory, are scheduled for May 27.

Several players, including Orton, receive bonus money for attending workouts. Orton stands to lose $75,000 if he fails to complete workouts.

"I have not talked to him, but I know Jason (Garrett) and our coaches have," Jones said on 105.3 Dallas-Fort Worth on Monday. “That’s just a situation that we’ll work through. We expect Kyle, when mandatory practice starts and mandatory things begin, we fully expect Kyle to be there.”

Orton is considering retirement, and to protect themselves, the Cowboys signed two quarterbacks, Brandon Weeden and Caleb Hanie, in free agency.

Cowboys officials were told Orton would return for 2014, and his agent, David Dunn, confirmed the conversations with reporters at the NFL owners meetings.
