Miami Vs Dallas - The Aftermath
Things we learned:
1. If the 2nd team defense can create 2 turnovers and 3 sacks. The first team should be better. Yes we did play the Dolphins but we saw plays from the "positions" in Kiffin's scheme where we need them. DeVonte Holloman was the guy who housed the 75 yard INT return but he plays at that Sam linebacker that will hopefully be Justin Durant's come season open if Durant can make plays like Holloman on a consistent basis Kiffin's scheme will be better than advertised.
2. The offensive line looked a lot better than people expected between zone blocking and a 3 Tight End sets Bill Callahan could possibly have this line almost where he wants them.
Players we saw promising things from:
George Selvie - With 2 sacks and 4 tackles Selvie made the world take notice. If it was one bright spot on the team defensively it was Selvie. now we hope for him to keep the magic going against Oakland.
Ronald Leary - When you impress a coach it's good when you impress the owner it's even better. It's early in the preseason but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said "“I don't want to be the coach, but I'm comfortable,” “He just adds a substance. It’s not just his size, it’s his punch. He adds a base in that middle and if you put that with [rookie center Travis]Frederick in there and that really changes things up for us with what we have.” Right Guard was one of those position where the Cowboys wasn't sure what they had, maybe we can see this a little better with Leary out there.
Lance Dunbar/Philip Tanner - This will be the matchup to watch for the next 4 weeks. As stated in Top 8 Dallas Cowboys to watch all preseason Dunbar is listed as the 2nd team running back but Phillip Tanner is trying to close the gap. It will be interesting over the next coming weeks if we stay with Dunbar as the first running back not named Demarco Murray to see the field or will Tanner get a chance to play with the 1st and 2nd team. If for the sake of pre season they switch things up, this could be a good battle, If we add Joseph Randle to the mix as well it could be even better.
