Cowboys VP Stephen Jones responds to report about 'trouble' for DE Randy Gregory
Stephen Jones hyped up the potential for Tyrone Crawford, Taco Charlton and Dorance Armstrong on Dallas' defensive line this season.
The Cowboys vice president spoke warily in a Monday interview about defensive end Randy Gregory.
Gregory, who returned from a yearlong NFL ban in July, sacked Sam Bradford in Arizona's first drive Sunday night. But a national reporter tweeted after the game that "there could be more trouble ahead" for Gregory, who's in Stage 3 of the league's drug program after repeated failed and missed tests dating back to 2015.
Gregory left the locker room without speaking to reporters after Sunday's game.
"We just don't know," Stephen Jones said of the report on 105.3 The Fan, reiterating what owner Jerry Jones said after the game Sunday night. "I will say this: As we all know, what Randy's been through is certainly something when he wakes up it's a challenge every day. In terms of where he is with the league, the team doesn't hear until it's time. We don't get on the inside of any of that, unfortunately - we just get to hear when unfortunately there's not good news.
"Right now we don't know of anything, but we do know that these things are challenges for these men. It's real. Mental illness is real, Addiction is real. And we certainly understand that."
Gregory has said he smoked to self-medicate for diagnoses including anxiety and depression.
"Let's just put it like this, his deal is day-to-day," Jerry Jones said Sunday night. "Randy came into this league as an outstanding player, there's no question about his talent. Having said that, we've just got to continue to work. ... We wouldn't have put him out there if we couldn't plan on him.
Here are more snippets from Stephen Jones' Monday interview:
On the defensive line: I think they've really executed and really coming into form pretty quickly.
Our journey in the defensive line's really starting to pay off. We've been chipping away at it year after year in terms of the resources we put in that defensive line and they're showing up.
What you hope to see out there in a perfect world is to see those guys out there, in particular on the field for a particular time when you couple with what we already have - the Tyrone Crawfords, the Tacos of the world, young Dorance Armstrong coming on. You can get real excited real quickly.
On linebacker depth: A lot of this work's been done without probably one of our best player out there in Sean Lee.
I think the linebacking group is as strong as we've had. You feel good about them playing linebacker and not just playing special teams... No. 53 [Justin March-Lillard] stepping up last night and Joe Thomas has been solid. There's some depth there [and] that doesn't even include Leighton [Vander Esch] who we've got there in our top three with Jaylon [Smith] and Sean [Lee]. It's just a really good group.
