Jerry Jones seems content to wait to pay Dez, DeMarco, and Garrett

So with the Cowboys at 6-1 and a pair of key players due to become free agents and a head coach also with an expiring contract, what will owner/G.M. Jerry Jones do?

All indications are that he’ll wait.

Jones had been trying to negotiate directly with receiver Dez Bryant, who eventually resisted what some league insiders believed would be an effort to persuade Bryant to agree to a team-friendly, ultra-long-term, Tyron Smith-style deal.  As to Murray, no serious talks have occurred.

Ditto with coach Jason Garrett, who works at a job that has no franchise tag or salary cap.

The thinking in some league circles is that Jones doesn’t want to disrupt the current momentum and has no qualms about letting it ride, even if the team’s impressive season eventually could cost Jones to pay a lot more money.  That’s a good problem for Jones to have, because it means he will have made a lot more money during the team’s special season.

Barring serious injury or something unforeseen, look for Jones to work something out with Bryant, to pay whatever it takes to keep Garrett, and to apply the franchise tag to Murray.

Of course, Garrett could choose to take less to get out of Dallas, if he’s had enough of Jones.  But Jones stuck with Garrett when the team was mediocre; Garrett may feel compelled to stick around now that it looks like the team will be pretty good.
