Cowboys sign rookie LB Keith Smith to roster

For the third time this season, the Cowboys have promoted rookie linebacker Keith Smith from the practice squad to the roster.

According to the club’s website, Dallas signed Smith on Saturday. To make room for Smith, the club waived rookie defensive tackle Ken Bishop, one of the Cowboys’ five seventh-round picks.

Smith (6-0, 232) was active in the Cowboys’ Sept. 21 win at St. Louis and their Oct. 5 victory vs. Houston. He played 11 combined snaps vs. the Rams (two defensive, nine special teams) and 10 special teams snaps against the Texans. Smith played collegiately at San Jose State, signing with Dallas after going undrafted in May.

The Cowboys have a few injury issues at linebacker, with starting strong-side linebacker Bruce Carter out with a thigh injury and third-string strong-side ‘backer Cameron Lawrence probable with a thigh ailment.

Dallas and Philadelphia are tied atop the NFC East at 5-1. The Cowboys host the Giants on Sunday.
