Stephen Jones: Still Room To Sign Dez Despite Smith Deal

The Cowboys have known all along they needed to sign two cornerstones of their franchise at some point this year.

Even though they’ve just locked up Tyron Smith on a deal that will keep him under contract through 2023, nothing has changed the Cowboys’ approach with the other guy.

Despite rumblings and reports that Smith’s eight-year deal worth about $98 million and $40 million guaranteed will prohibit the club from signing Dez Bryant this year, that seems to be the furthest from the truth.

“That’s not the case at all,” Cowboys’ VP and director of player personnel Stephen Jones said Wednesday. “We can get Dez done now if we wanted to. We’re still working on getting him done.”

While it doesn’t sound as if the Cowboys are seemingly close to a deal with the wide receiver, it doesn’t mean they’re out of cap space now after Smith’s deal that will average out to about $12.2 million.

“We can make it happen,” Jones said. “We’re still working on it.”
