Murray welcomes more rushing attempts

DeMarco Murray rushed for 1,121 yards with nine touchdowns in 2013 on his way to his first Pro Bowl appearance.

Murray was solid despite missing two games with a sprained knee. There will always be questions about the Cowboys’ running game because, well, let’s be honest, the team doesn't do it enough.

Last season, the Cowboys finished 24th in rushing at 94 yards per game. In 2012, the running attack was ranked 31st at 79.1 ypg.

In 2012, the Cowboys as a team rushed for 1,265 yards, the second-lowest total in franchise history. It’s interesting to note, the Cowboys threw for 4,729 yards that season -- the most in franchise history.

Things had to change the next year, and it did somewhat with Murray’s productive season.

Now things are changing again, with a new playcaller in Scott Linehan taking over for Bill Callahan.

Linehan is a man who likes to throw the ball, especially given the types of receivers he's had during his NFL coaching career. However, he doesn’t forget about the run game and has utilized Reggie Bush and Stephen Jackson, among others, in the passing attack.

Murray said he hasn't seen much change in what the offense will bring. What the Cowboys did in the NFL draft does constitute change.

In the first round, after not getting one of the talented defensive players, the Cowboys selected tackle Zack Martin and have moved him to guard to strengthen the interior.

While the overall scheme might not change, the personnel employing it has improved, which could lead to more runs from Murray.

“I’m happy to play behind those guys,” Murray said. “Ever since I’ve been here, I’ve loved those guys and love running behind them and they’re definitely the strong point of our team.”

The Cowboys need a rushing attack to take pressure off quarterback Tony Romo but more than anything else a change is needed in how the franchise does things.

“Yeah, yeah, whenever you have a chance to get more opportunities it’s always good,” Murray said. “But whatever they plan on doing hopefully we continue to have a lot of success in the passing game, running game, whatever it may be, continue to play ball and have fun.”
