Could the Cowboys trade for Ryan Mallett, LaMichael James this summer?

In the NFL, most of the offseason wheeling and dealing occurs early in free agency or during the draft.
However, it's not unusual for a trade to happen during training camp or just before the season starts.

Since Monday is the unofficial start of summer, NFL.com writer Chris Wesseling compiled a list of 10 trade candidates who could change uniforms in July or August and the NFL team's that would be interested.

Although there are no Cowboys listed, Wesseling does name Dallas as a potential landing spot for New England Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallet and San Francisco 49ers running back LaMichael James.
Mallet is one of two quarterbacks on the list, with Minnesota Vikings signal-caller Christian Ponder being the other. The Houston Texans are also believed to be interested in the former Arkansas Razorback, but Wesseling doesn't count out Jerry Jones and the Cowboys.

"Patriots coach Bill Belichick recently insisted he's not that interested in dealing Mallett, which is another way of inviting prospective suitors to raise their offers," Wessling wrote. "If second-round pick Jimmy Garoppolo looks ready for prime time in training camp, a Mallett trade remains possible."

As for James, Wesseling says the Texas-native will be left out of the 49ers' running back rotation and has been on the trading block for a year now.

"We suspect he hasn't been moved because no team is willing to part with a mid- to late-round draft pick for an underwhelming scatback," Wessling wrote. "He did star at Oregon under Eagles coach Chip Kelly."
