Roughly 15 teams are interested in former Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Ware and Broncos are favorite to land him
DeMarcus Ware shouldn’t have trouble finding a match after his divorce from the Cowboys was finalized Tuesday.
A league source said roughly 15 clubs, including “eight playoff teams,” have expressed interest in Ware after he was released and his nine-season tenure with the Cowboys came to a sudden end. Denver is the favorite to land the prized pass rusher, and he is scheduled to visit them, the source said. Ware’s attraction to the Broncos is understandable. They lost Super Bowl XLVIII, but are built to win. If Ware returns to form, he and former Texas A&M standout Von Miller could unleash havoc on quarterbacks in the AFC.
That Denver and so many other teams are considering the possibility of adding Ware isn’t surprising. After all, he has made the Pro Bowl seven times and has collected the second-highest number of sacks — 117 — among all players since he entered the league in 2005.
Despite the fact that his body has accumulated wear and tear over the years, Ware has remained productive. In a new defensive scheme at a different position, he contributed six sacks last season while fighting through neck, back, quadriceps and elbow injuries, the last of which required surgery. While the total was a career low for Ware it’s hard to tell if the diminished output was the result of poor health, his new role or a combination of both factors.
The uncertainty may make Ware more marketable especially to teams who want to believe he is the same player who amassed 19.5 sacks in 2011 and has the ability to hunt down quarterbacks in this pass-happy league.
