Practice Update: Two Return; Romo, Lee Not On Field
The Cowboys appear closer to getting two players back from hamstring injuries, one week after Bruce Carter returned from the same injury.
Dwayne Harris and Morris Claiborne were both at practice Wednesday, while quarterback Tony Romo and linebacker Sean Lee weren’t practicing. Neither Romo nor Lee were expected to be on the field.
Claiborne and Harris are both coming off hamstring injuries that they’d reinjured. Claiborne hasn’t played since the Giants game on Nov. 24, while Harris has missed the last two games.
The release of returner Micheal Spurlock signaled that Harris would likely return this week, and that now appears to be the case. The Cowboys used Spurlock’s roster spot on backup quarterback Jon Kitna, who was at practice Wednesday.
“When you have a number of different injuries, you have to make some hard decisions about who can stay on the roster and dealing with those things,” Garrett said. “Spurlock came in and did a fantastic job for us last week…He made a huge impact on the game and that’s the way he’s been all his career. That’s a hard decision to make, but again, you’re trying to make your best judgments about the injured players.”
At linebacker, the Cowboys were still missing Ernie Sims, in addition to Lee. However, DeVonte Holloman and Kyle Wilber, who both injured themselves and returned later in the game against the Redskins, were both at practice Wednesday.
Garrett said the mood of the team was still high and the players entered the week excited for the opportunity in front of them, despite potentially being without Romo and Lee.
“We have a great fan base from all over the world and we’re going to need our fans on Sunday night to make a difference in this ballgame,” Garrett said. “Our players, our coaches, our football team and our organization, we’re awfully excited about this opportunity. We want our fans to be excited and show that excitement come Sunday night because they can make a difference in this ballgame. In regards to injuries, that’s just the nature of this league. The teams that handle it the best have the right mindset.”
