Training Camp update day 14: Long Form
Here’s what stood out from Day 14 of Dallas Cowboys’ training camp practice Sunday night in Oxnard, Calif.:
• The Dallas Cowboys held another night practice Sunday and three players – DT Sean Lissemore, S Eric Frampton and LB Ernie Sims – left early with injuries.
• CB Orlando Scandrick received a personal foul penalty and was basically ejected from practice when he ran into an official while pursing a play. The official braced for contact, and Scandrick pushed him away in frustration. As Scandrick left the field, DT Jason Hatcher tapped him on his helmet. Scandrick went to the sideline and didn’t come back in, kneeling at times with his head in his hands and then a towel draped over his head.
• The Cowboys had their second fight of training camp. This one was between RB Phillip Tanner and LB Taylor Reed. The two went at each other after becoming heated during a blocking drill. Reed ended up losing his helmet. Afterward, however, the two gave each other a fist bump.
• WR Dez Bryant slipped as he broke during his route in 1-on-1 drills, allowing CB Brandon Carr to intercept a Tony Romo pass.
• Safety Micah Pellerin had a pass breakup defending WR Danny Coale on a pass to the left side in 1-on-1 drills.
• WR Anthony Armstrong beat rookie CB B.W. Webb down the left sideline on a go route for a catch on a deep pass. Later in team drills, Armstrong caught a deep pass from QB Nick Stephens working against safety Micah Pellerin, who didn’t turn to play the ball. Armstrong caught a fade pass for a touchdown in red zone work from Kyle Orton in team.
• WR Jared Green dropped a pass near the left sideline after getting open against CB Sterling Moore in 1-on-1 drills.
• In his first practice back from a concussion, rookie WR Terrance Williams had a good day. He caught a deep pass from QB Kyle Orton in 1-on-1 drills. Later in team drills, Williams caught a pass on a crossing route for a big gain.
• RB Kendial Lawrence dropped a pass to the right flat working against air in running back drills.
• After Tony Romo changed the play at the line of scrimmage in team drills, he threw a pass near the right sideline to TE James Hanna, who beat CB Brandon Carr in coverage.
• Safety Barry Church intercepted a deep pass to the right seam from QB Tony Romo. The pass was intended for WR Dez Bryant. Romo, however, would have likely been sacked first by DE George Selvie.
• RB DeMarco Murray had a big gain in team drills on a run to the right side in which he quickly got into the secondary.
• DL Ben Bass took down RB Lance Dunbar for a loss on a running play to the left side in team drills. On the next play, Dunbar used a nice cut on a run to the left side to sprint into the secondary for a big gain.
• DT Nick Hayden would have sacked QB Tony Romo in team drills.
• CB Orlando Scandrick stuffed RB DeMarco Murray on a run wide left. Scandrick didn’t allow Murray to turn the corner.
• DT Landon Cohen was flagged for encroachment during team drills. Not long afterward, the defense was flagged again for encroachment followed by a false start penalty on the offense. The Cowboys also had a false start penalty against the punt team. Also, late in team drills, the defense was flagged for another encroachment penalty, causing LB Sean Lee to yell from the sideline, “Come on!”
• WR Danny Coale was wide open on a crossing route and had a long gain on a pass from QB Kyle Orton.
• Rookie CB B.W. Webb fell down after fielding a punt in the open field. On the next punt, he bobbled the ball before catching it.
• WR Dwayne Harris and WR Terrance Williams each dropped a kickoff return early in practice.
• TE Jason Witten had a ball go off of his hands on a short pass to the right side from Tony Romo in 7-on-7 drills that was intercepted by LB Sean Lee.
• WR Tim Benford dropped a pass in 7-on-7 drills. WR Eric Rogers also dropped a high pass from QB Nick Stephens in 7-on-7.
• QB Nick Stephens made a bad pass to the right sideline that sailed high over the head of WR Anthony Amos, who was open.
• DE George Selvie would have had his second sack of the practice against QB Tony Romo during a two-minute situation in team drills.
• Kicker Dan Bailey had his 50-plus-yard field goal hit off the uprights and was no good to conclude two-minute work.
• LB Bruce Carter intercepted a pass from Tony Romo in the end zone during red zone work in team drills. The ball deflected off the hands of CB Brandon Carr before Carter snagged it.
• WR Dez Bryant made a great block downfield to spring TE James Hanna on a touchdown catch to the left side. Bryant’s blocked sealed off safety Barry Church to open a big hole for Hanna who sprinted into the end zone during red zone team drills.
• TE Colin Cochart was wide open but dropped a pass to the right flat in team drills from QB Alex Tanney.
• Late in team drills, safety Jakar Hamilton delivered a big hit on rookie RB Joseph Randle on a run to the left side, stopping him short of the end zone at the 2-yard line.
