Previewing Day 1 of Dallas Cowboys training camp practice in Oxnard: All eyes on QB Tony Romo

The Dallas Cowboys will begin their ninth training camp in Oxnard, Calif., and 35th camp in Southern California on Thursday with the high temperature expected to be 84 degrees.

The Cowboys’ first 2014 training camp practice will be at 5:45 p.m. CT. The Cowboys will have their first walk-through practice of training camp prior to their evening session, and in between coach Jason Garrett will address the media at his daily news conference.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday at the club’s opening news conference to kick off training camp that the offense and defense wouldn’t go against each other in competitive situations the first two days of training camp practices. The Cowboys’ offense and defense won’t face off for the first time until the players put on pads for the first time Saturday.

The only time the Cowboys’ offense and defense will work against each other during practices Thursday and Friday, Garrett said, would be in the morning walk-through practice and the first eight minutes of the evening practice (but at a walk-through pace as well).

Who to watch: All eyes Thursday will be on quarterback Tony Romo, who didn’t participate in team drills during the offseason. Romo is coming off of two back surgeries. Garrett said Wednesday Romo will be full-go for the first training camp practice. However, Romo will be doing much of the same the first two days of training camp practices that he did during the offseason — leading the Cowboys in a walk-through practice — until that changes when the pads come on Saturday for the first time. Also, that’s the same for free agent addition defensive tackle Henry Melton. The Cowboys’ biggest free agent addition of the offseason didn’t participate in team drills this offseason as he continued to recover from ACL surgery. Melton will be full-go for the first training camp practice, but like Romo won’t be tested much until Saturday.

What to watch for: Keep an eye on new offensive play-caller Scott Linehan and what changes he incorporates into the offense and even in individual drills. Also, it’ll be the first time we’ll see recent linebacker addition Rolando McClain. The Cowboys completed a trade with Baltimore on July 1 for McClain, the former first-round pick. McClain, 25, retired twice before being reinstated after the Cowboys made the deal to get him. McClain is expected to be involved in the team’s first practice Thursday before leaving for Alabama to appear at a trial Friday on charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, Garrett said. The coach also added that McClain is expected to return to training camp practices this weekend after his trial date Friday in Alabama.
