Dez Bryant: We’re a great team, we just can’t beat ourselves like we did against San Francisco

Dez Bryant was held under 60 receiving yards five times last season. The Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl wide receiver opened the season falling short of that mark on Sunday at AT&T Stadium.

Bryant, who missed some of the second half with cramps, finished with 55 yards on four receptions in a 28-17 loss to San Francisco.

Bryant took a big hit to his back late in the first quarter when a Tony Romo pass intended for Bryant was intercepted. Team doctors attended to him on the field, but Bryant, who has dealt with back problems throughout his career, assured he is fine.

“My back feels good,” Bryant said. “I had to take a deep breath, hoping and wishing it was nothing, but it was good.

“I was just cramping. I always cramp. I drink a lot of fluid. Those things happen.”

The Dallas offense wasn’t nearly as potent as many thought it would be entering the season. Romo tossed three interceptions and DeMarco Murray lost a fumble as the 49ers built a 28-3 halftime lead.

So what held the offense back?

“There’s no way around it, there’s a lot of things that we can clean up,” Bryant said. “I think we’re going to clean them up. We know that we’re a great football team and we’re confident.”

What exactly needs to be cleaned up?

“We just can’t beat ourselves, plain and simple,” Bryant said. “And that’s what we did. … I’m not taking any credit away from the 49ers, but it would be different if we didn’t beat ourselves.”
