Cowboys Claim CB Off Waivers, WR Benford Released

The Cowboys claimed cornerback Jemea Thomas off waivers Wednesday and will likely get him ready to play the preseason finale against the Broncos.

Thomas, a sixth-round pick of the Patriots this year, played in two of the three preseason games for New England.

The Cowboys made room for Thomas by waiving wide receiver Tim Benford, who has been on the team’s practice squad for the last two seasons. So far this preseason, Benford had four catches for 34 yards.

With Benford out, and Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Dwayne Harris (hip, ankle) not expected to play, the Cowboys won’t have a lot of options at receiver. Cole Beasley could get a few snaps if any, leaving just Devin Street, Jamar Newsome, Dezmon Briscoe and LaRon Boyd on the field Thursday.

It should be just as thin at cornerback, too. The 206th overall pick out of Georgia Tech, Thomas should get some chances to play Thursday with B.W. Webb (hip) still banged up. The Cowboys won’t likely play Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne could sit as well.

While Orlando Scandrick is expected to get a few snaps, the Cowboys will still be rather thin at the position. Tyler Patmon and Terrance Mitchell should get the bulk of the reps in the game, along with Thomas.
The Cowboys trimmed the roster to 75 on Tuesday and will get to 53 by Saturday evening.
